James López specializes in contemporary Latin American literature, literary translation and Cuban Studies

Professional and Community Activities

James López has published widely in his field, most recently concerning the work of Cuban painter Pedro Pablo Oliva, the late Cuban writer Virgilio Piñera and Mexican writers Homero Aridjis and Mario Bellatin. In 2014, López was commissioned by Teatro El Público of Havana to translate the Pulitzer-prize winning playÌýAnna in the TropicsÌýfor joint performances in Havana and Miami Beach, and has recently published translations of work by the novelists Rodrigo Rey Rosa and Homero Aridjis.

As co-director for the Center for José Martí Studies Affiliate at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êapp, Professor López was awarded a 2019 National Endowment for the Humanities Grant to establish the summer institute, “ÌýJosé Martí and the Immigrant Communities of Florida in Cuban Independence and the Dawn of the American Century." This institute will bring together 30 scholars from throughout the United States to study the history of José Martí and the cigar workers of Florida and their involvement in the fight for Cuban independence and the Spanish-American War.

Professor López teaches an array of courses and has led numerous study abroad programs to Cuba and Perú. His work with students abroad earned him °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êapp International Service Award in 2009.

Honors and Awards

López has received numerous grants in support of his research and conference travel, and was twice awarded the College of Arts and Letters Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award for 2007-2008 and 2009-2010. In 2019 he was awarded the Louise Loy Hunter Award for Outstanding Faculty Member at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êapp.
